X-ray technicians, also known as radiologic technicians, must prepare patients for medical imaging tests. They must prioritize radiation protection through proper film positioning and effective patient direction. Likewise, X-ray technicians must consistently produce quality images with minimal amounts of repeat orders.
These technicians sometimes have to work cross-functionally to assist other departments as needed, but the majority of their assignments will revolve around specific imaging orders. They may be responsible for guiding patients to dressing rooms and encouraging the correct jewelry and clothing standards.
Job Responsibilities
- Process patient films and perform radiological exams
- Fulfill diagnostic x-ray orders
- Organize patient documents and diagnostic orders
- Maintain low repeat rate on x-ray images
- Evaluate radiology supply stock
Qualifications and Skills
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent experience
- 1+ years of experience in a healthcare setting preferred
- Active Basic X-ray Machine Operator (BMO) license
- LMRT or ARRT certification may be required
Strong multitasking skills are essential to this position, because X-ray technicians are responsible for properly positioning patients, directing them from a distance, and producing clear images. Similarly, X-ray technicians must be comfortable communicating with patients and explaining the steps and strategies behind their imaging order.
