Sleep technologists, or polysomnographic technologists, provide diagnostic, imaging, and polysomnographic tests to help establish and treat sleep disorders. They may work in hospitals or other healthcare facilities, such as sleep clinics, to provide convenient patient services that accommodate regular sleep schedules. They work directly with patients of all ages and are responsible for understanding the various sleep cycle stages in each type of patient.

Qualifications and Skills

• High school diploma, GED, or equivalent experience
• Associate’s degree with specialization in sleep technology
• 1+ years of experience in a healthcare setting preferred
• Experience in a sleep lab setting preferred
• BLS and CPR certifications

Computer literacy is critical to the daily tasks of a sleep technologist, as they are responsible for digitally monitoring levels during each sleep study. Sleep technologists must convey strong communication skills to effectively describe sleep study details and interpret results for physicians, and these professionals must be comfortable with irregular or overnight hours.
