Respiratory Therapist
These therapists primarily work with patients with chronic respiratory diseases like asthma or emphysema, babies who have underdeveloped lungs, and older patients with lung diseases. Respiratory Therapists also work with first responders and assist with patients who suffered from heart attacks, drowning, or shock. Respiratory therapists work in a variety of environments and need to be familiar with a variety of medical machinery such as ventilators, life-support, and more.
Job Duties
Respiratory therapists will typically be in charge of the following:
- Instructing patients on how to use treatments
- Performing initial diagnostic tests
- Recording and reporting the process of treatments
- Working with the patient’s PCP to create treatment plan
- Evaluating patients with breathing disorders
- Perform tests like measuring lung capacity
Education
- At least an Associate’s degree, but a Bachelor’s degree is preferred
- Certification by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC)
- CTR and RRT certifications
