Organized, timely, and computer-savvy, medical records clerks file and monitor patient records in a healthcare facility. A majority of their responsibilities call for data entry, chart coding, and digital storage. They are often in charge of creating and updating patient-related or facility-related records as well as correctly filing and labeling them. Since they deal with medical records, it’s essential for medical records clerks to understand and apply HIPAA regulations. Medical records clerks must also have strong interpersonal skills as they often communicate with multiple staff members across different departments.

Job Responsibilities

  • Gather, update, and store patient information
  • Copy, scan, and electronically transfer data
  • Understand and practice HIPAA expectations
  • Collect off-site medical records
  • Review records requests 
  • Compile and distribute lab reports to physicians 
  • Send of information to the appropriate staff and facilities according to confidentiality regulations of HIPAA

Qualifications and Skills

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent experience
  • At least one year of experience in a clinical setting preferred
  • Ability to use word processing software 
  • Excellent analytical skills as they must gather and interpret high volumes of information
  • Excellent technical skills as their everyday tasks involve filing, digitizing, and/or sending out records
