Medical Assistant (Certified/Registered)

Working alongside physicians, medical assistants perform a range of administrative and clinical tasks. Administratively, medical assistants often communicate with patients to schedule appointments, update insurance information and demographics, and provide billing information. Clinically, medical assistants may help physicians by prepping examination rooms, explaining upcoming procedures to patients, and collecting lab samples for processing. However, the specific responsibilities of a medical assistant will vary depending on:

  • The type of facility they work in
  • The location of the facility they work in
  • Whether the physician they assist specializes in a particular area of medicine 

Job Responsibilities

  • Schedule appointments 
  • Receive and place phone calls 
  • Process and update patient information 
  • Record medical information 
  • Gather lab samples 
  • Prepare examination rooms 
  • Obtain vitals 
  • Administer immunizations 

Qualifications and Skills 

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent experience 
  • Associate degree in a related field preferred 
  • Medical Assistant Certification (CMA) or Registration (RMA) required  
  • 3+ years of experience as a CMA or RMA
  • Proficiency with word processing software
