Physical Therapy Assistant (PTA)

Under the supervision and guidance of a physical therapist, a physical therapy assistant (PTA) provides treatment for patients with disabilities, injuries, and other issues. A physical therapist will design a treatment plan for each patient, which the PTA will use to help manage pain and restore mobility. Sometimes, after evaluating a patient and working through their treatment plan, a PTA may recommend modifications to better fit a patient’s changing needs. PTAs typically work in a hospital or physical therapy office. 

Job Responsibilities

  • Monitor patient’s physical progress during treatment 
  • Record observations about patient progress
  • Report any concerns about a patient to their physical therapist 
  • Adhere to the individual treatment plans established by the physical therapist 
  • Prepare treatment rooms and equipment 
  • Assist the physical therapist during treatments such as massaging and stretching 

Qualifications and Skills 

  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent experience 
  • Associate degree from a PTA program required  
  • Active in-state PTA licensure required 
  • 1+ years in a PTA role preferred  
  • Proficiency with word processing software
