Sonographer/ultrasound technologists provide a range of ultrasonic examinations and imaging tests. Depending on a physician’s orders, these technologists may work with patients of varying ages and image varying areas of the human body. After each imaging service, sonographers/ultrasound technologists develop imaging films and record patient data for physician interpretation.
Job Responsibilities
- Schedule diagnostic and imaging tests
- Explain ultrasound and imaging services to patients
- Properly position patients for each imaging service
- Assist with patient transportation to imaging rooms
- Perform imaging tests
- Process patient documentation and update records
- Maintain a sterile ultrasound room and stock supplies
Qualifications and Skills
- High school diploma, GED, or equivalent experience
- Completion of accredited Ultrasound Technologist Program required
- 1+ years of experience in a healthcare setting required
- Previous imaging, diagnostic, or ultrasound experience preferred
- Active Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer license required
- Active membership in the American Society of Radiologic Technology required
Professionals in this line of work must work hard to maximize patient comfort while producing quality imaging for interpretation. Similarly, strong communication skills are essential to the position, because sonographers/ultrasound technologists frequently communicate with both patients and clinical staff.
